XOEL MÉNDEZ was born in Ourense (Galicia) in 1981. He graduates from Santiago de Compostela University with a degree in Communication Sciences; concludes his studies in École des Hautes Études Rennes II, specialising in Cinema and Television.
In 2005 he obtains a Master’s degree in Creative Documentary at Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona and in 2007 begins his career as a director and scriptwriter for television. The following year he presents his first tv documentary, “Cantos Rodados”, also programmed at film festivals (Play-Doc, Cineuropa). In subsequent years he writes and directs numerous features and programmes for Galician TV.
In 2010 he sets out on a round-the-world trip. On his return, he decides to settle his accounts with music and self-releases four LPs and an EP under the pseudonym of Xo; the albums are published on Bandcamp: www.ninarreninxo.bandcamp.com
In 2012 he embarks on a new audiovisual project, “Wu Xing”, a documentary pentalogy that evokes the cycle of elements in Chinese tradition. Two pieces of the series, the full-length “10/7” and “Covada”, receive the subsidy from AGADIC (Galician Agency for Cultural Industries) for script. Another one, “Venezia”, is currently in post-production stage.
In 2017 his debut feature “10/7” is selected to participate in Árche creative workshop, which is a part of Porto Post/Doc Festival. In 2018 10/7 receives the AGADIC subsidy for Talent for full-length cinematographic projects and its premiere is scheduled for 2019.
Currently he combines his filmmaking career and work as a videographer, producer, musician and educator.
